Copeland & Sons water jug (pitcher) produced in February of 1887. Rust transfer ware on cream foundation with gilded overpainting. This piece is in excellent antique condition.

Some slight fading of the gilding and pattern on handle and lip which is to be expected. The piece's approximate dimensions are 11.25"h x 9.25"w (including the handle) x 6.25d. He was kind enough to offer his opinion. Note: this does not make the following an official appraisal.

This was his best opinion based upon my photos. The mark on your jug is not clear - but it clearly has a number'23' at the top and likely a letter'K' in the right hand corner. There was a pattern registered by W T Copeland on the 23rd January 1883 and I suspect that this is it. There is an impressed'87' and near it an impressed'2' - this is probably the month/year that the jug was actually made - February 1887.

All this dating information fits in well with the aesthetic movement. There is then an impressed'COPELAND' in an arched shape (its not fully formed) - with perhaps a letter in it - I don't know the significance of the latter.

The hand painted number / symbols were added by the people doing the decorating - each person would have their own mark to identify them. It was a form of quality control. In other words very confusing and purposely misleading. The piece will definitely be insured.
