Rare Reed & Barton c1879 Silverplate Lemonade Ice Water Tilting Pitcher w 2 Cups. Presented is a fantastic quality antique Reed & Barton silverplate lemonade or ice water pitcher, with two cups. This piece dates to circa 1879. The pitcher is a'tilting' style, sitting on a base with a sort of cradle arrangement so it can be tilted to pour the contents.
The two goblet style cups sit on little bases to either side of the pitcher. Both the pitcher and the cups are beautifully hand chased and hand engraved with intricate floral decoration emerging from stylized baskets or vases, with medallion and rosette borders, all very detailed and well done. The interior of the pitcher has a removable liner in white porcelain. The pitcher has a capacity of 9 cups, or 45 fluid ounces/1.33 liters, while the cups each have a capacity of about 1 cup or 8 fluid ounces/237 milliliters.
The pitcher is marked on the underside with'Manufactured and plated by Reed & Barton' as well as the patent date of August 4, 1868 and what is likely the manufacture date, May 4, 1879. The cups, drip tray, and stand are likewise marked'Manufactured and plated by Reed & Barton' while the porcelain liner is marked'Reed & Barton's patented moveable ice pitcher linings.
Even the ice-catcher/lip of the pitcher is marked Reed & Barton. This piece is in great overall condition. One'arm' on which one of the cups sits has had an old solder repair, which is very hard to notice, particularly with the cups in place. The details of all the decoration are nice and crisp. The porcelain liner is in great shape.The piece measures about 16 ¾ inches tall without the handle raised, or about 19 inches with the handle at full height.
