I have for sale this very large antique lidded Pewter Pitcher. I have seen similar pieces called Jugs and Flagons. Im really not sure just what the difference is. They are described as containers for water, wine, beer and ale.I dont know what this one was for but I havent seen one quite as large. It holds about 1 1/2 gallons of water and a bit more. I cant imagine what might have been poured from it as the weight when full would be close to 20 pounds. It measures about 15 inches tall to the thumb lever by about 9 inches wide at the widest point in the body. It weighs 7 lbs 5 Oz.
There is a partial mark on the bottom that I have not identified but comparing the parts of the mark that are there it looks similar to some of the marks used in Belgium. It is pewter and has nice patina from age and has a great bulbous look.
It has a shell designed thumb piece connected to the hinged lid. The jug does have a number (one larger) of dings and some scrapes as shown in the photos. I must say after looking at hundreds of Pewter Jugs, it has the most attractive profile I have seen. It displays very well, it is the largest with the most unusual shape and has presents others dont. The item "Huge Antique Pewter Water Wine Ale Beer Pitcher Or Jug Or Flagon" is in sale since Thursday, March 14, 2019.
