C1884, CHRISTOPHER DRESSER FOR ELKINGTON ANTIQUE SILVER PLATED WATER CLARET JUG. A fine example of an aesthetic style antique Victorian silver plated claret or water jug, a documented Christopher Dresser.
Made by the well respected firm Elkington & Co, and dating to circa 1884. The jug, of bulbous form with angled handle decorated with geometric patterns, has an unusual double hinged lid. The smaller hinge opens to allow liquid to be poured, with the overall lid opening from the top of the handle.
The base is fully marked to the base for ELKINGTON & CO together with the pattern number 16587, and the date letter'Y' corresponding to 1884. Height: 20.5 cm or 7 7/8 inches. Width (including spout): 17.8 cm or 7 inches. Capacity: 3 pints or 1.7L. In good antique condition, with expected age related wear and some shallow indentations to the body. Small solder spot to the lower edge. Solder also visible internally at the base of the handle, though no sign of restoration externally.
